Paul Dubsky

Paul Dubsky is the founder of Ulysses Whiskey x Art, a novel / eccentric / exceptional / possibly mad project.

Born in Dublin, Paul has lived in Prague since 1992. He spent the best part of 25 years in the drinks business, importing Heineken, Carlsberg, Hendrick's Gin, Murphy's, Beamish, Bulmers and several Irish whiskey brands to the Czech Republic. He has now started his own odyssey and is inviting all to share the journey.

Ulysses Whiskey x Art is an international collaboration of distillers, artists and artisans, united to create a unique collection of rare whiskeys to celebrate James Joyce’s masterpiece. Together they will be releasing 18 whiskeys over the forthcoming 18 years (each Bloomsday / June 16th), named for the 18 episodes of Ulysses. Contributions are being made by Irish, Italian, Swiss, French, German, Czech, English, Scottish, Japanese, Indian, Norwegian, American distillers and more. Each artisan distiller is responsible for one episode: one whiskey, one year.

The first release consists of only 5,000 bottles. Each following year 250 bottles less. The final release in 2041 (on the centenary of Joyce’s passing) will consist of only 732 bottles (matching the number of pages in the first edition novel published by Shakespeare & Company in Paris).

Together they are striving to be as creative, relevant and daring as possible with each Episode, to honor Joyce’s work, and also make it entertaining for the community of patrons they hope to inspire with this project, e.g., with a nod to Joyce’s pioneering use of stream of consciousness, the final bottling (in 2041) will be the same liquid as the 1st, albeit aged in casks 18 years longer; the 4th German (in 2027), 6th French (in 2029), 7th Czech (in 2030) and 9th Japanese (in 2032) will celebrate the centenary of each translation; the 12th Episode will be American whiskey, because the book was banned in the US for 12 years – this particular whiskey will be a peated single malt, so you can taste and smell the US Post Office burning the books in 1920’s when you drink it! And so on… the distillers, artists and artisans are taking inspiration from Joyce’s schema, his life’s journey and Ulysses itself.
