Stephen Karingi
Stephen Karingi is the Director of Regional Integration and Trade Division of the Economic
Commission for Africa. He joined the United Nations in April 2004. Before joining the United
Nations, Mr. Karingi was a Senior Analyst and the Head of Macroeconomics Division in the
Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA). Before KIPPRA, he served
as a Lecturer of Economics at Egerton University.
He has published extensively in major academic peer-reviewed journals and contributed
chapters in edited books with renowned publishers. He has contributed to global and
regional policy dialogues through renowned think-tanks.
Mr. Karingi spearheads policy research in a broad array of areas within the Economic
Commission for Africa and is a member of the Editorial Boards of several African journals,
such as the Journal of African Trade and the recently launched Journal of African
Transformation.
He was a recipient of the Zolt-Gilburne Visiting Fellowship of the International Tax
Programme of the Harvard Law School in 2001 and was recently the winner of the 2013 Alan
A. Powell Award in recognition of his contribution to Global Economic Analysis issues from
an African perspective.
