1922: The Year the Modern World Began

Ezra Pound declared that 1922 was the year the modern world began, meaning it was the year the 20th century really began. Could 2022 be seen as the year the 21st century really begins? The similarities are everywhere, in 1922 the world was coming out of pandemic, inflation was raging, supply chains were stretched as empires and their networks from Austria to the Ottomans collapsed. New countries emerged in 1922, the Soviet Union was established and Mussolini marched on Rome, each setting the ground for communism and fascism. Ireland became independent and avoided both of those ideology. Einstein won the Nobel prize. The atomic age was upon us. And in art James Joyce unleashed Ulysses on an unsuspecting world. Everything changed, old assumptions washed away and the 20th century began in earnest. Could this year be the same? Are we witnessing the birth of the 21st century?
