This time last year they were the future, today they look like the past. Having tanked in value this year, can cryptocurrencies recover particularly as they have tanked at a time when central banks are still printing paper money? But maybe it’s just a temporary setback. Conceived by computer hackers and cryptographers, they represent a completely new sort of financial transaction that could still become mainstream. The technology that underlies cryptocurrencies – blockchain – is hailed as the greatest advancement since the invention of the Internet.
