Quangoland – The Privatisation of Government Sold Out

A Quango is defined as a quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation. By the last count in 2015 there were, according to a study by the Institute of Public Administration, some 257 quangos in operation in Ireland from An Bord Bia to the Advisory Council to the Commission on Taxi Regulation to the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector. Given our enormous permanent civil service working to various Government Departments, why do we need all these bodies, what to they do and how do they affect the economic and political life of the country?
